Biblioblog Rankings – December

Posted in Humor by Joseph Kelly on December 30, 2009

I am sure that there were many of you, like myself, who were a little disappointed that the monthly Biblioblog rankings were going to be discontinued.  I thought that it would be  nice if we saw at least one final monthly ranking to bring us to the end of 2009. So I have done the arduous labor of plugging in all the Biblioblogs into the Alexa ranking website and plugging their rankings into the chart below. Enjoy!

If there are people interested in keeping the Top Biblioblogs list going, it certainly could happen. The only time consuming part of the process is getting the Alexa rankings, everything else is done by the features of a spreadsheet program. It might work even better if there was one person for every fifty blogs, so that one person was only responsible for getting the rankings of 50 blogs, as opposed to 350+.

For now, I was just content to finish the rankings for the year, and I have no plans to continue it in 2010. However, I might be willing to contribute the time necessary to rank 50 blogs each month.

Oh wait, never mind. I was looking at the US rank.k The Alexa rank seems a little more reasonable!

  10. Joel said, on December 30, 2009 at 10:48 pm

I do think, however, that based on Alexa’s on comments that we should move everything to the 3 month ranking which is more steady

  11. Rick Sumner said, on December 30, 2009 at 11:31 pm

It seems to me that we should be able to cobble together a script to generate the rankings. There’s a dozen sites that do it, with a limit of ten URLs.

I’m intrigued. I’ll get back to you.

Why the false reporting? Not to cause any trouble but if you check Alexa’s ranking I am ranked third place with 173, 545 hits.

  14. Joel said, on December 31, 2009 at 9:23 am

While, John, jumping the gun again.

  15. Joseph Kelly said, on December 31, 2009 at 9:26 am

I did my best to be fair while ranking the scores. I set aside a large portion of my day so that I would be able to check all the rankings in one sitting. The numbers at the Alexa site are not static, but when I finished with the final blog, I went back and plugged Jim West’s address back into the Alexa site and got the same result. If you check now, it is different, just like your ranking. So my list should be an accurate representation, a snapshot in time if you will, of how Alexa understood the site traffic on Wednesday morning. Also, I was not paying very much attention to what blogs were what as I was going through this project. I didn’t even notice when I ranked my own blog. Hope this helps clarify. Congrats on picking up some more traffic.

  17. Joel said, on December 31, 2009 at 9:52 am

Joseph, I fully appreciate what you have done here. I also know that Alexa doesn’t always update its numbers as quickly in some areas (servers) as others. Plus, not knowing when you started building this list, I can safely say that I wouldn’t make any judgments about your numbers – which are meant only to be in fun – using today’s numbers for a post started only you know when.

I can understand now why the Top 50 list has stopped doing these things.

  28. Luke said, on December 31, 2009 at 12:36 pm

First of all, John Loftus needs a chill pill.

Second, thanks to Joseph Kelly for compiling this list. Are you using the 7-day average or the 1-month average? I’ve found that the 7-day average jumps all over the place.

Third, if you’re going to maintain this list, perhaps we could get some more specific criteria for what qualifies as a Biblioblog?

Fourth, maybe you want to just list the top 30 or something? I’ll bet everything beyond 30 makes the ranking list much more arduous to maintain.

  29. Joseph Kelly said, on December 31, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Apparently I used the three month average ranking. If there is a one month ranking, I am not sure where it is. These rankings are updated daily.

  30. Joseph Kelly said, on December 31, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Okay, so I found the one month ranking, but that is not the one I used. Sorry for the confusion.

  31. John W. Loftus said, on December 31, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Now that you’ve recognized your error perhaps in fairness to everyone on the list you should state that this ranking is for the last three months and not from December alone?

I don’t care if you do or don’t, but I know in the interests of fairness I would say this.

  32. T.C. R said, on December 31, 2009 at 1:26 pm

    Nice.

  33. Joel said, on December 31, 2009 at 3:40 pm

John, no offense, but it is still the monthly ranking as of December. And, according to Alexa, the three month ranking is the more stable of the bunch. If this is continued in the future, I would recommend that we use the three month ranking.

  34. John W. Loftus said, on December 31, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Oh, really? Sorry if I misunderstood. It’s not the first time nor will it be the last.

    Cheers.

I had no idea that someone was going to keep this rankings, but thanks for all your efforts Joseph. I never thought I would see the day my blog would crack the top 100. Next thing you know I will wake and women the world over will find me absolutely irresistible.

Wait a minute, I am a Biblioblogger. No chance of that ever happening …

    Thanks again, though.

  40. stephan huller said, on January 2, 2010 at 5:41 pm

One other stupid thing. My name is listed as ‘StephEn Huller’ and the site “stephanhuller.blogspot.com.” The name that appears on the blog site ‘StephAn’ is correct. Is it possible Joseph you could change StephEn to read ‘StephAn’? Thanks

  41. Mads said, on January 3, 2010 at 7:28 am

That is frustrating news. If MandM had been included (though given it was about to be axed when we applied, I now understand why our recent request to be included was not actioned) we’d have ranked 3rd.

  42. Joseph Kelly said, on January 3, 2010 at 9:05 am

    StephAn, I made the change.

Mads, sorry about this. You certainly belong on the list. I copied and pasted November’s rankings into a spreadsheet and did not consult the people responsible for Top50Biblioblogs. Since they are not axing the whole site, just the monthly rankings, they may have included you per your request. Anyway, if someone wants to continue this in 2010 and consults with me about it, I will be sure to include your blog in the spreadsheet.

  43. Joel said, on January 3, 2010 at 9:25 am
